Holiday Whites 3-pack
For friends & family of Jess Dynda
With this delicious 3-pack you'll have three "at the ready" whites, lined up in the fridge, for anything the holidays call for. Included are a trifecta of three of my favorite value whites--one each from Portugal, Italy, and France.
I hope you'll enjoy some of these on future Zoom tastings, and of course while you're cooking up your holiday meals.
Adega Monte Branco Alento Branco 2019, $16
The Adega Monte Branco is everything I love in the spirit of a young winemaker with energy, passion, and a determination to create something special and long lasting.
We'll go back again and again to Monte Branco but for now maybe you'll settle for this welcome mat white wine, a fresh bottling from 2018 made from local and native Portugeuese grape varieties.
Okay, okay...if you must know it is blended from 50% Arinto, 40% Antão Vaz, and 10% Roupeiro. (for what that's worth). It is built to drink young, while it's nice and primary and refreshing. I love the citrine color and the super fruit aromatics that leap from the glass. A wine to keep by the caseful at home.
Les Hautes Noelles Muscadet 'Les Parcelles' 2019, Loire Valley, France $18
The appellation “Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu” which was created in 1994, encompasses 19 villages and approximately 300 hectares of vines. One of these villages is St Leger les Vignes, where Domaine Les Hautes Noëlles tends approximately 7 hectares of vines planted to Melon de Bourgogne, the varietal of Muscadet.
There is more than a faint whiff of the sea in these wines. For sure, only a 30 minute dry to the Atlantic can explain this, but the oyster shell and minerally sea salt sensation in these Muscadet are enough to get the salivary glands into overdrive!
Giovanna Tantini Bianco di Custoza Veneto, Italy 2019, $17
I will never again be late for a meeting with Giovanna Tantini. As was the case when we met for the first time this past February, I was in fact 6 hours late. She expected me at 10. I got there at 4. It turns out we were both right, and both wrong. Having given up on me, she rearranged her day and made further plans. So when I arrived in the middle of her NEW plans, she was ticked. And I was embarassed, offering to return again a different day. But she brused that idea off, made a phone call, and then told me to get back in the car.
This a white you'll not soon forget. Made from the local Garganega and splashed with salt and pepper varieties Chardonnay and Trebbianello, it is a lively, gorgeous white with that oh-so refreshing summery freshness that we just love. In fact, we tasted this over the winter directly from tank, and I there was just no way in hell I was spitting it in the trench drain. When Giovanna served up so nice fresh salami chunks, I was hooked. This tank-made wine is refreshing, pure, and lively. The Trebbianello gives a nice salty and savory element. Ready to quaff!
